Not at all. Do let me know which one of those are incorrect (or the ones that you think are subjective and not marked so).

> GIVING UR MOM'S TIPS RATHER THAN TELLING US FROM UR EXPERIENCES

They include ...

1. Tips from some of my friends (mom inclusive)
2. My own experiences according to my tates

a refreshing piece of the web

Giri,
You have created a structured, clean, crisp site that holds interest. Your writing style is refreshing and you should write more. I chanced to reach it (and in doing so reach many more webpages of people I know)because only today I noticed that you had left a feedback in the guestbook of my webpage. Great to catch up with you and good to know that Y is Yasa in your name. Next time we talk I will try to catch it though I would not be able to match it.

BSNL DataOne

Tks much for the DataOne write up :)

Sorry, am using the guestbook to ask for help :|

Got BSNL just recently along with the Huawei MT800.

Managed to connect thru WinXPHome built-in PPPoE. Found the speed
deplorable (<90) & changed RWIN to some 22040 as per some calculation
256*464*1.5/8 etc ( 464 being avg ms to ping bos.speakeasy.net &
something called (?)MSS was 1440) and immly, the speed went upto 244

Q: what would be the best RWIN and such other arcane thingies for a
WinXPHome?

Its called an "ADSL modem" (CPE). You call it a router. Yeap, that CD
says, methinks, that it can be a DHCP server & such; so I guess,
therefore it is a router?

Q: If it were to be used as a router then, how would one connect more'n
one PC to the 'net via MT800 for it has just one ethernet port.
ADSL ->(?) Hub ->PC1,PC2 etc ?

If the PPPoE client on MT800 isNOT being used ( & instead a s/w on PC is ),
then, the MT800 is being used as a 'pure bridge' ? If so, is the PC
more open to attacks from the 'net ? Would it be more prudent to make
the MT800 connect to the 'net on power-on whereby the PC is unknown
to the 'net and therefore safer ? viz. does the MT800 expose one IP
to the 'net & another - 192.168.1.abc to the PC ?

Some of these questions may reveal that I haven't yet u/stood your page
well. If so my apologies. I shall be reading it up again later & this time
hopefully, with more understanding ;)
rgs & TIA

Re: Computer Restarting frequently

In which case, you should try uninstalling the PPPoE dialer in your windows machine and follow the instructions on my HOWTO so that the built-in dialer is used. Hope this helps.

Please note that I don't know what the above messages mean, I am assuming that there is something wrong with the PPPoE software that you installed in your machine, hence the above suggestion.

Thanks a lot

Thank you for the article.
It helped me do my work.
I am currently using FreeBSD and while the BSNL engineer came over he did not really know what he was doing.
What I am curious is - how did you figure out all these. RTFM??

Re: Thanks a lot

Feels good to know that it was useful. Yes, I did a bit of RTFMing and playing around with various settings in the router. In case you have specific instructions for FreeBSD, do send an email with the same and I will include it in the document.

Re: Huawei SmartAx MT 800 setup for Dataone.

Aaah. Neat :-). Make sure that you have the firewall on the router configured properly (atleast set to medium level) so that your box is safe from crackers and bad people on the net.

Try this:

follow the instructions on opening the web based configuration and

- In the Huawei Control Center, locate HOME on your Left Panel.
Go to Home->WAN Settings.

- Click on PPP. Then click on PPPoE.

- Enter your user name and password. Click Apply.
Eg: [username: your_name@dataone.in]

BSNL Broadband

Plz tell me how to connect BSNL Dataone connection using the
D-link 502T ADSL Router...

Thanks & Regards

Re: BSNL Broadband

Ramakrishnan, I do not know anything about the router in question and can't help you with it. You should be able to find the configuration instructions from the manual by comparing it with the document that I wrote. In case you take down notes, do sent them across if you want me to add them to the document I wrote.

great help with mt880

Very nice. Work put in here is real nice. Wish you could help me out with a way to clear some doubts.

There is a remote admin interface. Should I be enabling it or can I just do http:xxx.xx.xxx
and then login as admin work with it.

Also, how to change admin's pwd to say india.

Is the MT880 a combo of router and PPPOE dialer ?

Where r u serving ur page from ? From ur linux box at home ?

-Narahari

Re: great help with mt880

Just to follow on my previous question.

You have mentioned about some software to dial out. Is it the RASPPPOE stuff that you have mentioned ?

My dad is not computer savvy so asking him to find this is not easy. Hence I seek your help. Please do not mind.

My setup here at home in Atlanta is CABLE MODEM to MOTOROLA ROUTER to all my PC's. I port forward to the machine of my choice.

Do you think you can shed some light for the MT880 regarding this ? You might want to also add the link http://www.portforward.com/huawei/SmartaxMT800-portforwarding.htm in your help section. For a lot of people port forwarding helps a lot.

I am not sure if you have MT880 but is the setup something like :

Phone Line to MT880 to Ethernet card on my dad's box. I am not saying you know this, but is this a good guess from my side to make ?

Also, do you know of anyway a dynamic ip like http://www.dyndns.org can be updated by the router, like my MOTOROLA does it. This way I dont have to remember the ip addresses.

My dad has the KANA's dyndns updater but if you know of a hardware solution, let me know.

Also, what is the typical setup by dataone for its user's, software dialup, thru MT880 or any other ?

Thank you so much for you time, effort and energy.

Keep it up.

Regards
-Narahari.

PS: Can I add your link in my webpage, if it is alright with you ?

Excellent

I got here looking for some info on the BSNL modem MT882 that was installed by BSNL at our home in Chandigarh. The info on the website comes really handy and sure will help others immensely. I am excited to find that some useful info has started to trickle into websites and will help below average computer users transition into above average users.

I am sure MT882 and MT800 are very similar and can be configured pretty easily if you know how to configure at least one of them.

Thumbs up to "Appaji" in particular and all others who have contributed!!!!

Thanks again,

Mandeep
